The television landscape has a new record-holder. Following one of the most unpredictable and talked-about races in recent memory, Apple TV's breakout comedy Widow's Bay dominated the ceremony, taking home the coveted title of Best Comedy Series at the emmy awards 2026. Created by katie dippold, the series about a quirky group of residents living on a haunted Massachusetts island shattered previous benchmarks by securing a staggering 14 wins—the most ever achieved by a comedy series in a single year.

This historic haul surpasses last year's record-holder The Studio (13 wins) and 2024's leader The Bear (11 wins).

Accepting the award for Outstanding Comedy Series, Dippold thanked her cast, crew, and Apple from the winner's podium. "They truly just let us do this weird show, we can’t thank you enough," she said, humorously adding her gratitude to "the evil entity on the island that trusted us with its story."

A Night of Historic Firsts and Multiple Wins

Dippold wasn't the only one celebrating; she also secured an individual trophy for Writing in a Comedy Series. She was joined on stage by executive producer and director hiro murai, who made history tonight by becoming the first Asian person to win in the Directing in a Comedy Series category.

Lead actor matthew rhys had a banner evening, capturing two major statuettes: one for his role as Mayor Tom Loftis in Widow's Bay, and another for Lead Actor in a Limited Series for The Beast in Me. He was joined by fellow first-time Emmy-winning co-stars kate o'flynn (credited as kate oflynn) and Stephen Root.

Overcoming Tough Competition

Entering the night with 19 total nominations—including eight picked up during the Creative Arts ceremonies for casting, cinematography, and production design—Widow's Bay pulled off a stealth late-season sweep. It successfully edged out fierce competition from HBO Max’s long-running hit Hacks, which was entering its fifth and final season. Despite Hacks entering the night with 25 nominations, veteran star Jean Smart still managed to secure a win for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.

With a second season already well underway in the writers’ room, Widow's Bay has firmly cemented its legacy as a titan of modern television.
